Solo and Ensemble is a festival organized by the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) for scholars between 6th and 12th grades. Students prepare, rehearse, and perform music as soloists or in small ensembles and receive feedback for their preparation and performance. Larger groups such as Vocal Jazz and Jazz Band also perform. There are three levels that a scholar musician can enter, the highest of which allows advancement to a State Festival.
Any scholar musician enrolled in a music class at Bartels Middle School or Portage High School can enter through their school as a singer or an instrumentalist. Resources are available to coach students and accompanists are provided.
Portage works with three other school districts to host the annual Solo and Ensemble festival, and has a history of qualifying for the State Solo and Ensemble Festival at UW-Whitewater.
